Are Fuel Taxes Going Up?

It sure seems that way. The U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works held a hearing on April 14 on the long-term solvency of the Highway Trust Fund.  They were told that money in the Highway Trust Fund will be gone in 2022 if no tax changes are adopted.  There are only three realistic options to raise money:  Increase the existing fuel taxes; institute new taxes, such as vehicle miles traveled (VMT) or on electric vehicles (EVs); or take money from the general fund.
