RIPA Petitions PHMSA on Ultrasonic Testing

After more than a decade of talks with DOT and various demonstrations of the test method, RIPA has petitioned the agency to incorporate into the regulations the method of leakproofness testing with ultrasonic sensors.  If PHMSA agrees to propose the method, there would follow a period of public notice and comment.  If the method is ultimately approved and codified into the regulations, it could be used by anyone without having to hold a  Special Permit or Approval.   For the past several years, only a couple of RIPA members have operated with such a company-specific approval.  Their exemplary record in  using the method can only bolster RIPA’s case for wider adoption.
