Canadian Provinces Announce One-Year Delay in Penalties Related to Electronic Logging Device Compliance

In an announcement that will affect U.S. industrial packaging reconditioners and manufacturers doing cross-border business with Canadian firms, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, an association of provincial transport agencies, has issued a release stating its members will implement a phased-in approach to enforcement of the Electronic Logging Device mandate from Transport Canada. The Canadian ELD rule is scheduled to go into effect June 12, 2021.

The release states that Canadian jurisdictions plan to support the mandate through a period of progressive enforcement without penalties, including elevated education and awareness, until June 12, 2022.

The delay is necessary because the rule requires third-party certification of any ELD and Transport Canada was slow to announce which third parties were authorized to make those certifications. Approved devices can be found HERE as they become certified.
